Get Up, Stand Up Now:
Generations of Black Creative Pioneers

12 June - 15 September 2019
Somerset House

The major summer exhibition featured over 110 interdisciplinary artists, exploring Black experience and influence, from the post-war era to the present day. Curated by artist Zak Ové, the group show was inspired by the work and legacy of his acclaimed father Horace Ové.

Historic artworks and new commissions sat alongside objects from personal archives, much of which had never been seen by the public before. Through these original photographs, letters, films and audio clips, the exhibition connected the creative, the personal and the political, reflecting how artists responded to the urgent issues of our times.

Yinka Ilori and Here Design created a powerful and vibrant exhibition visual identity.

The exhibition catalogue included contextual essays by Margaret Busby, Errol Lloyd, Lindsay Barrett, Caryl Phillips, June Givanni, Vivien Goldman, David A. Bailey MBE and Sharmaine Lovegrove.
