We Are Made of Star Stuff
4-27 March 2022
Hoxton 253
Curated by Berta Zubrickaite, We Are Made of Star Stuff at Hoxton 253 invited to unearth the layered entanglements that exist between humans and their natural environment in the context of geological time.
This group show drew attention to the ways in which human and non-human agencies are wrapped together. The exhibition positioned deep time as a vantage point which is no longer bound to the dominating constructs of capitalist time, the brief time we live, or even to the extended time of human species.
The exhibition and associated programme was supported by Hello Again, Hackney, the borough’s cultural reopening initiative, as well as Asahi, Simon Lee Gallery, Colour Company, the Hoxton Trust and Omni.
The exhibition visual identity was created by João Chaves.
The public programme events:
- Opening reception with drinks sponsored by Asahi Super Dry
- Solar Dyeing with Plants workshop
- Cut, pile, shift, disrupt! Deep Time Thinking Through Collage workshop
- Thematic Life Drawing session
The show took its title from Carl Sagan’s quote discovered through conversations with the artist Ilana Halperin and Minerals of New York.
Featured artists included: Lydia Brockless, Ilana Halperin, Geistė Marija Kinčinaitytė, Matthew Needham, Josephine Pryde, Georgia Somerville Watts and Maël Traïca.
